Nicole is going into high school this fall and has been admitted into a special program called STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Last week and this week she has been attending an internship camp with STEM doing all kinds of cool engineering and technology projects. She's been programming robots, constructing cardboard chairs strong enough to support a person, building towers out of straws and paper clips and going on field trips to local universities. They visited a "clean room" where she got to see how they make silicone wafers and etch chips into them.
Yesterday she told me of a robot she constructed that sounded really cool. It was a "guard dog" that would make rounds and if its sensors detected an open "door" it would turn toward it and bark until you pushed a button to tell it to continue its rounds.
Earlier she brought home an electronic circuit she had built that had two LEDs that alternated flashing. She had done all the soldering herself and it worked really well. it had two potentiometers to control the blinking speed and everything.
Nicole was not at all excited about some of the engineering concentration of the program, but she seems to really be enjoying it.
